BAT, short for Basic Access Token, is up over 71 percent in the past few days. The price has risen from a tick under $0.47 per share Sunday to over $0.80 at the time of t...his writing. This cryptocurrency currently occupies over one billion dollars in market capitalization and has a very concrete and tangible application in the real world, making it one of the more popular cryptos among traders and investors.

BAT is an open source blockchain based on Ethereum. In a nutshell BAT is integrated into the Brave browser and was created to solve inherent inefficiencies and privacy violations nagging the digital advertising industry. BAT is the world's first private global ad platform and is unique because it allows users who opt in earn tokens for attention paid to ads that populate. In other words users get BAT for viewing ads, which of course turns everything on its head.

Additionally, verified content creators and publishers earn BAT by allowing Brave to serve ads on their platform. (Currently that platform can be a website, YouTube, Twitter, Reddit, Vimeo, Twitch and/or GitHub.) Creators can also earn through tips contributed by readers, followers and subscribers.

Verified creators can choose to get paid in BAT, Bitcoin, Ethereum or U.S. Dollars and earnings can be spent on gift cards or used to support other content creators. In the future users will also be able to apply earnings toward premium content subscriptions.

BAT is the first crypto application to have more than 1 million users and is one of the leaders in the new Internet economy. This should not come as a surprise as Brave Software Founder and CEO Brendan Eich created JavaScript and co-founded Mozilla, which developed the famed Firefox browser.

The Brave browser itself is faster and more private. It utilized shields which blocks ads, gets rid of unneeded cookies and makes the browser harder to recognize. It also uses secure connections when possible to block malware.

Brave maintains support for chrome extensions too.

The browser also features the option to open pages in Tor. Tor is free and open source software that enables very private internet usage by hiding the user's history and masking their location. It obscures the user's location by routing them through several encrypted servers before they land at the destination page.

Brave with BAT integration has launched current or past successful ad campaigns with Nexo, eToro, Verizon, Crytpo, BlockFi and many other leading brands. They have also established a solid presence in the blockchain gaming community.

Overall the Brave community currently boasts over 25 million active monthly users, 7.4 million active daily users, and over 1 million verified creators accepting BAT (this author is one of them).

Business Intelligence firm MicroStrategy confirmed adding more than a billion dollars worth of Bitcoin to its holdings today. The buy is the second largest known single investme...nt into Bitcoin, behind only Tesla's $1.5B transaction announced February 8th.

MicroStrategy's total Bitcoin holdings now stand at about $4.4B (at the time of this writing), which looks pretty good compared to an investment of $2.17B. CEO Michael Saylor has recently stated that his company is using excess cash to purchase BTC and that they intend to keep doing so. Saylor also won't rule out issuing new debit or equity securities to buy more of the cryptocurrency.

Saylor isn't just embracing the potential financial benefits of Bitcoin but also the underlying internet subculture. Danny Nelson of CoinDesk brings us this gem today:

“Saylor has fully steeped himself in bitcoin’s swirling meme culture. He added laser eyes to his Twitter profile in apparent unity with the #LaserRayUntil100K movement last week. On occasion he trolls gold as an inferior reserve asset. He has shown a penchant for Lord of The Rings content, liking memes in praise of the 'One Coin to Rule Them All' and retweeting videos in which he is Gandalf, leading the Rohirrim into battle against evil, evil fiat."

Meanwhile Point of Sale Solutions provider Square announced a $170M purchase of Bitcoin Tuesday, according to Yahoo! Finance. The company, founded by Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey, had previously purchased $50M worth of BTC in October of 2020. Yesterday's purchase makes Bitcoin about 5 percent of Square's cash and cash equivalents.

Square's press release had this to say:

“Aligned with the company’s purpose, Square believes that cryptocurrency is an instrument of economic empowerment, providing a way for individuals to participate in a global monetary system and secure their own financial future. The investment is part of Square’s ongoing commitment to bitcoin, and the company plans to assess its aggregate investment in bitcoin relative to its other investments on an ongoing basis.”

Square Inc. developed the popular mobile payment service CashApp, which reported over one million first-time Bitcoin buyers in January 2021. CashApp also reports that over three million users used the service to purchase BTC in 2020.

Similarly, in October 2020 online payment giant PayPal began allowing U.S.-based users to purchase four different cryptocurrencies through its platform – Bitcoin, Bitcoin Cash, Ethereum and Litecoin. A similar offering will be available in the U.K. by June of this year.

Services like PayPal and CashApp are tapping into an increasing market driven by what PayPal CFO John Rainey calls 'crypto-curiosity'. More and more consumers are interested in finding out about cryptocurrencies and what they have to offer and payment service providers PayPal and CashApp are providing a point of entry.

Ride-hailing platform works on a very broke business model of monetizing and prioritizing profit over its drivers, riders and people at large. The platform also requires geo-location and geospatial distance data from the external world within the walled garden of a blockchain for the allocation of rides and computation of ride fare prices.

The Æternity blockchain is an Erlang-based scalable smart contract platform that has been redesigned at the protocol level to address some of the most fundamental challenges native to preceding blockchains.

The following are some major technical advantages provided by æternity that stand out for us at Drife as against the other blockchain protocols existing currently in the market.

- Oracles are fundamental to any fully functional decentralized platform that wants to fetch data from the external world. Æternity acknowledges this requirement and integrates oracle services as a part of æternity’s core blockchain protocol. - Æternity runs on the super cool Bitcoin-NG Consensus Algorithm which is the evolved version of the Bitcoin protocol. It still uses Nakamoto consensus but separates leader election and block production by introducing two kinds of blocks called key and micro blocks. Splitting up leader election and block production allows a leader to produce micro blocks in rapid succession, increasing the transaction throughput significantly.

- Unlimited scaling is possible with lightweight and trustless off-chain state channels that are built into æternity’s first layer itself. The state-channels provide support for smart contracts and enable inexpensive private transactions through them.

On 2nd October, the European Central Bank (ECB) announced that it is seriously considering the idea of a digital Euro and that its study of the idea should start by mid-2021.

The ECB report looks at ho...w that might affect payments to retailers now and in the future, as well as look at the ways in which virtual currencies would fit into the whole Euro system. However, the report does not suggest what digital currency model the ECB might use.

The report also suggests that the ECB may start a virtual currency programme in the middle of 2021 “to ensure meaningful answers are obtained to the open questions raised.” It is likely to begin with an investigative phase where numerous experiments are conducted, and there will also need to be a stage in which the ECB consults with all the stakeholders in the Eurozone.

The ECB report also pointed to the idea that digital currencies promote better financial inclusivity, stating: “The possible advantages of a digital euro and the rapid changes in the retail payment landscape imply that the Eurosystem needs to be equipped to issue it in the future. A digital euro could support the Eurosystem’s objectives by providing citizens with access to a safe form of money in the fast-changing digital world. This would support Europe’s drive towards continued innovation. It would also contribute to its strategic autonomy by providing an alternative to foreign payment providers for fast and efficient payments in Europe and beyond.”

There will be several hurdles to jump before a digital euro is created. It must “keep pace with technology” and be available “through standard interoperable front-end solutions throughout the entire euro area and be interoperable with private payment solutions.” It must also match the features of cash in that it must be “easy for everyone to use, be free of charge, and protect privacy.”

The ECB said the digital euro must also be available outside the Eurozone, save costs and be environmentally friendly, signaling that it should be based on technology that minimizes ecological footprints.

As the 10th of March approaches the suspense around new requirements for regulated virtual currencies services companies in Estonia grows. What are the new mandatory requirements and what impact it will have on... the existing businesses?

Since late 2017 Estonia rapidly became a safe haven for the regulated blockchain projects, amounting in total of over 2500 licenses issued for wallet and exchange activities in a relatively short period of time. During that time we have seen “the good, the bad and the ugly” of blockchain startups. That was the trigger for the government to come up with more strict requirements for the virtual currency services providers. In 2018 the FIU has expressed its concern, and the government acted. New regulation enforces money laundry prevention, tax evasion, continuous and permanent economic activity of the businesses.


Big share of the projects regulated in Estonia have to come to terms, that their licenses will be revoked due to non-compliance with the new regulation.


The main challenge as we (Consulting24) see it, is physical presence requirement. Meaning, the main decisions regarding the activity of the company have to be made by the management in Estonia. Main AML functions have to be carried out in Estonia. AML Compliance Officer has to have an impeccable reputation. Physical office with the equipment has to be located in Estonia. July 1st 2020 is the deadline to “get the affairs in order” and get ready for raids, inquiries, and check-ups.


The new share capital requirement is 12,000 EUR instead of 2,500 EUR, and it has to be paid with monetary contribution to the company’s banking account in European Economic Area (EEA). The company’s banking account could be in a credit, e-money, or payment institution located in EEA, which provides cross-border payments to Estonia or has its branch in Estonia.


Stricter AML/KYC rules will be also required, which equal to the requirements of financial institutions. Anonymous accounts and transactions won’t be allowed. Enhanced due diligence methods have to be applied to the High Risk countries. Business relationship with shell banks and financial institutions will be prohibited.

Crypto to crypto exchanges will get regulated.
