So what is Blockchain anyway? By now you've probably heard the term thrown around and you may have some vague awareness that blockchain is connected to the world of c...ryptocurrency. But what exactly is blockchain and how does it work?

The word itself is made up of two components – block and chain. The block component refers to data (information) and the chain component refers to how that data is stored.

So when we put the word back together we see that a blockchain is a certain way of storing data.

Said another way, it's a type of database.

And what is a database? It's a collection of electronic data or information that is organized so that it can be efficiently located and retrieved. More precisely, a blockchain is a specific type of database. While a blockchain can store many different types of information for our purposes we'll focus on blockchain as a transaction ledger. Think of a ledger in a checkbook that is used to balance your account. Or for younger readers think of the list of recent transactions that comes up after signing into online banking.

In a blockchain a 'block' is filled with data. When the block is full it is 'chained' to a new block which is then filled with additional data. The chains are compiled in chronological order using hashes that help identify each individual block.

Blockchain transactions are distributed or decentralized. This means that they don't take place on a single computer on a single server but on a shared network where all users retain control. The peer-to-peer (P2P) network has many computers (or nodes), often spread out throughout the world and owned by different people or entities, that work together to verify and complete the transaction. If one node makes an error the other nodes through a consensus process will eliminate the incorrect information. Said another way, all of the nodes work together to come to the same conclusion. Incorrect data do not get added to a ledger but once correct information is added it can never be changed.

Thus blockchain transactions are very difficult to falsify or alter. The blockchain ledger records every single transaction that has ever taken place on that blockchain in chronological order. Blockchain transactions also use encryption keys and hashing to secure and protect the data while network nodes complete transactions by solving algorithms. All these factors combined make blockchain nearly immutable (impossible to change) and very transparent (easily verifiable for all to see).

Even tho the Market is down by -10%, Cardano does not seem to feel the correction of this cycle.
Pushing up by +2.5% at the time of this post.

It's one of the major coins (by volume) that did not s...uffer correction withdrawals, yet.
That does not mean Cardano is not immune to correction.

Where do you see Cardano in the future?

Profiling Polkadot

Emerald Crypto | February 22, 2021

Polkadot (DOT) is an Altcoin that is still flying a bit under the radar but this digital asset may very well be worth keeping an eye on.

The project was foun...ded by Ethereum co-founder Gavin Wood in 2017 and funded by the Swiss-based Web3 Foundation. Web 3.0 is a venture seeking to build a decentralized, open-sourced and fair internet where users control their own data, identity and destiny.

What makes Polkadot unique compared to other blockchains like Bitcoin and Ethereum? In a word it's interoperability.

But what does that mean? One of the driving characteristics of blockchain is decentralization. Transactions are performed not by a centralized database operating on a centralized server but by a network of computers around the world working together to piece together and finalize a particular process.

There are many benefits to this collaborative approach (which will be outlined in a future article) but one problem that has arisen is that there are lots different blockchains that cannot interact with each other in any kind of a meaningful way.

Interoperability makes it possible for such blockchains to do just that. As Kenneth Rapoza of Forbes puts it, Polkadot serves as a protocol for protocols or a blockchain for blockchains.

DOT also allows users to create their own blockchains that can then interoperate with other blockchains - and not just tokens but a variety of digital assets.

Another upside of Polkadot is that it is scalable. As mentioned last week, Ethereum is having trouble with bottlenecks (due to demand) and thus increasing transaction fees. Polkadot has the ability to adapt to growing demand by allowing a greater supply (scalability). Thus DOT could offer a solution to an existing problem.

Polkadot began the year at $8.88 and as of this writing is currently trading at $38.85, an increase of over 337 percent. Currently DOT sits at a market capitalization of $35B, which ranks fourth among all cryptocurrencies. This is crazy to think as DOT Founder Gavin Wood still describes the project as a work in progress.

Analysts and investors are definitely starting to see the opportunity and potential though. According to Coindesk beginning on February 4th,

"Goldman Sachs, ICAP, JPMorgan, and UBS have bought the first exchange-traded product (ETP) that offers exposure to Polkadot’s DOT cryptocurrency for clients."

Author Tanzeel Akhtar points out that these entities are not investing in DOT itself but rather in a security that tracks its performance. It is still a major development nonetheless when big boys like these are taking notice of one's project.

DOT is definitely a cryptocurrency to watch out for.

Binance Rising

Bitcoin is the world’s leading cryptocurrency, Ethereum is the most widely used blockchain technology, and Binance is the world’s largest crypto exchange. An exchange is a marke...t that allows users to trade cryptocurrencies or to buy and sell digital assets with traditional fiat currencies.

Binance Coin (BNB), the house coin of the Binance platform (like Ether is to Ethereum), has made a huge splash this week by surpassing Tether as the world’s third largest cryptocurrerncy by market capitalization. As of this writing BNB has a market cap of over $43.7B.

The price of Binance Coin was $37.98 on January 1st and according to Coinbase the current price is $281.39 – a 640.89% increase for those keeping score at home.

Binance used the Ethereum blockchain until 2019 when it switched to its own technology called the Binance Smart Chain. According to Ivan on Tech,

“Binance Smart Chain is a blockchain built with the flexibility for smart contracts, decentralized applications, and cryptocurrencies.”

The technology makes it “super easy for developers to move their projects onto the blockchain.”

Binance is known for its large centralized exchange but the venture has more to offer than a blockchain, a coin and a marketplace. They also have a funding scheme, an Academy, a Trust Wallet, a charity and a decentralized exchange.

Which leads to what very well may be the cause of Binance Coin’s current surge.

The DeFi movement in a nutshell is a move towards decentralization. When something is centralized there is an entity and usually a person who can be identified as in charge or running things. 99Bitcoins summarizes the goal of decentralization nicely: to replace centralized financial services with autonomous organizations that allow everyone to participate.

This means the decentralization of everything – currency, financial services, infrastructure, and exchanges.

Uniswap (UNI) has been the leading decentralized exchange on the market for some time now. The protocol runs on Ethereum but recently has had trouble catering to increased demand caused by the DeFi fad. According to Bhushan Akolkar of CoinGape, the result of this rising demand has been an increasing transaction fee (gas fee), which has shot to over $20 per transaction on average.

On Thursday Binance’s decentralized exchange PancakeSwap (CAKE) overtook Uniswap in terms of daily trading volume. CAKE runs on the Binance Smart Chain.

This news is likely at least one of the causes of Binance Coin’s sharpt increase this week. Additonally, Binance has a buy back program where they buy up BNB every quarter and then 'burn it'. Thus the coin is essentially deflationary which bodes well for the future value of the asset.

Is Binance the new Ethereum? That’s probably a little premature but this is definitely a trend to keep one’s eye on.

The price of bitcoin slipped 10% in two days to fall below the $32,000 level for the first time since Jan. 11.

The total market value of all cryptocurrencies shed more than $100 billion in the last 48 ...hours.

The plunge comes after U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen warned about the illicit use of cryptocurrencies.

Bitcoin slumped for a second day Thursday, taking the digital currency’s losses to more than 10% over 48 hours and wiping off billions of dollars from the crypto market.

The price of bitcoin slipped 8% on Thursday to as low as $31,007, falling below the $32,000 level for the first time since Jan. 11, according to data from industry website CoinDesk.

The world’s most valuable digital coin has had a wild few weeks, briefly hitting $41,940 earlier this month before sinking sharply the subsequent week. The reason for its latest move wasn’t immediately clear, but investors told CNBC it is likely a natural correction.

“Corrections are a natural part of any market and are especially natural in the bitcoin ecosystem,” Michael Sonnenshein, CEO of Grayscale Investments, told CNBC. “From 2016-2017, we experienced 6 corrections of approximately 30% or more on the way to new highs.”

Ether, the second-biggest crypto token by market value, was down almost 9% in the last 24 hours at a price of $1,182. The coin hit an all-time high of $1,439 on Tuesday, according to Coin Metrics data.

The total market value of all cryptocurrencies shed more than $100 billion in the last 48 hours, falling from about $1.07 trillion to $918 billion as of 11:45 a.m. ET.
